Senior Product Designer

Full–time Position

Chicago, IL

Blackbox is looking for a Senior Product Designer who wants to take part in building a product that helps independent artists and their customers by creating the best experience possible for a complex problem: selling and shipping physical goods.

About Us:

Our mission is redefining the meaning of supply chain by helping independent artists sell and ship stuff directly to their fans for a fraction of the usual cost and effort of doing it themselves. In addition to selling and shipping Cards Against Humanity around the world, Blackbox helped ship the most–backed Kickstarter game in history, and ships everything from coffee accessories to comic books. To put it simply, we help our clients manage and grow their small businesses by simplifying a difficult obstacle—logistics—so that they can focus on doing what they love: creating.

About the Role:

You will be joining the Design Team, reporting directly to the Head of Design. You will work alongside engineers and designers as a key contributor to our software product. The product enables both internal and external users to manage the fulfillment lifecycle and get our clients' products into the hands of their customers and manage all the touchpoints in between.

We are looking for someone who believes that cross–disciplinary collaboration generates the best work and that partnering with all business units is essential. We want someone who is humble, but who also has the confidence needed to lead a feature's design from concept to completion.

The ideal candidate is excited about doing the research needed to better understand complex problems and using that information to solve them. They understand that great design starts with identifying pain points and gathering insights with users and domain experts through collaboration and co–creation. They also understand that iteration is an important piece to improving the user experience. The role requires a candidate to have the ability to switch between high–level design thinking and hands–on design work. We are interested in well–rounded individuals who are naturally inquisitive and passionate.

This is a full–time position based in Chicago, IL. We have great benefits including: medical, dental, and vision insurances; 401(k); a pre–tax transit benefit; and generous vacation time. We also work out of our wonderful co–working space filled with artists, developers, game designers, photographers, the occasional dog, and a fully–stocked kitchen. We are committed to diversity and especially encourage members of underrepresented communities to apply.

  • Guiding not only what the product should look and feel like, but what should be built and why.
  • Gathering requirements and building a shared understanding around the needs for a new or updated feature.
  • Being a continuous advocate in–house for all of our users, internal and external.
  • Synthesizing any quantitative and qualitative data available and using that to inform solutions.
  • Defining and refining solutions through a variety of methods: user flows, wireframes, high–fidelity mock–ups, prototypes as needed.
  • Taking ownership of assignments from start to finish.
  • Leading meetings and facilitating group discussions.
  • Supplying engineers with any production–ready assets needed.
  • Excellent communication skills (you should be able to clearly articulate your design decisions).
  • Experience leading design projects from requirement to production (with examples).
  • Experience designing interfaces for systems–level applications.
  • Able to take direction and work with others well. It's important to have conviction in your work, but you must value the feedback of your team and internal partners.
  • High attention to detail, including proven ability to manage multiple, competing priorities simultaneously.
  • Some experience running and analyzing qualitative research such as: usability studies, preference tests, tree tests or market research.
  • Effective in a self–motivated environment to gather the information you need to complete your work effectively.
  • Experience with Sketch is required.
  • Familiarity with at least one or more of these prototyping tools like: Axure, Atomic, Framer or InVision.
  • Experience with data visualization a plus.
  • A minimum of 4 years experience designing usable experiences, preferably on teams for specific products.
  • BA or BS in design or similar field.
  • An online portfolio or case studies demonstrating your experience crafting great user–centered design solutions from concept to completion.
  • Past work experience in Supply Chain/Logistics is a plus.
